End of Watch
It is late when I open the bedroom door
and quietly walk to our daughters crib
where peacefully she dreams~
A gentle smile forms upon her tiny lips
as I brush the hair from her face~
Tenderly, I place my hand upon her chest
the last time I'll ever feel it beating~
Down the hall our oldest daughter sleeps
unaware of my presence in her room~
I pull her covers back into place
and tuck them tightly around her small body~
I bend to kiss her forehead and inhale her innocent scent
Her sleep is restless and softly she mumbles~
The last time I will hear her voice~
Across the house you are finally asleep
my pillow clutched tightly to your chest~
Your tears are still wet upon your cheeks and lashes
and you look so tiny in our giant bed~
In a whisper you beg me, "please don't leave."~
Tonight I do not have a choice~
My Watch has Ended!
This is for all the ones who have given their lives so we may enjoy the freedom and way of life we now have.
